本人現在美國法學院就讀，本篇文章曾投給國內幾家知名媒體，均被告知因是評價新華社的且有敏感內容，所以不能發。
我是一名在美國法學院讀書的中國留學生，我們對奧運，西藏事件等國內的熱點當然也會如在國內時一樣的關心，雖然我們留學生中對此也有不同看法和意見，有時還會爭執得很厲害，但是我們在法學院接受的最基本的道德和學術準則就是要求我們引用或翻譯轉載別人的文章必須做引證或註解，同時標明出處，以備讀者，教授或他人檢閱，不得作一絲篡改刪減或偽造，法學院的辯論往往是建立在雙方都認可的事實的基礎上進行的辯論，否則這種辯論就變得毫無意義了，所以尊重事實本身是最起碼的品行。在看了新華網的專稿及其翻譯的加州柏克萊大學王靈智教授4月9日發表在CNN的評論 Bashing China is not the answer 文章後，覺得實在忍無可忍：一是隨意修改文章標題，二沒有附原文或做連結以讓讀者加以對照，最惡劣的是任意地廣泛地篡改原文，歪曲原作者思想和主題，這種翻譯著實比斷章取義還要不道德的多，故筆者將這篇新華網翻譯和原文都附後，並一一指出其這些翻譯問題所在。短短几天時間，該文已被搜狐，新浪，東方網和和新民網普遍轉載，在Google上能搜到千餘條記錄，所以我希望這些媒體立即作出更正，以免再以訛傳訛。

我們知道，翻譯有直譯和意譯兩種，但都不能篡改或任意刪除原作者的基本思想和重要內容。新華網的整篇翻譯讓人瞠目結舌，譯者（或者是編輯）將所有他認為是對中國負面的或不喜歡的事實描述和評論要麼刪除要麼按照最正統的意識形態去修改，王教授的最後兩段話中關於對中國人的排外和民族主義情緒高漲可能導致的災難的深深擔憂是本文畫龍點睛之筆，竟然也被我們的譯者釜底抽薪式地篡改了，這種翻譯不僅是對王教授的著作權的侵犯，更是對中國國內讀者的嚴重誤導，看來本文足以能申報有史以來最牛的譯文。當然再看一看譯者的姓名，左嶠，只能啞然失笑了，顧名思義，就是往左矯正唄。

在第一段中， 新華網的翻譯漏了本段的第二句話，在奧運火炬向西經由倫敦，巴黎和舊金山向北京傳遞之際，它正吸引著有資金和有組織的抗議者們，他們代表了不同的通常不會協同工作的單個目的的組織。
Among these groups are various factions of the Free Tibet movement, the groups against genocide in Darfur, global warming, Burma's military dictatorship, job loss in the U.S., and such diverse groups as the Falun Gong and Taiwan independence activists.
第二段話，新華網的譯文整個就被就刪除了, " 在這些組織中有自由西藏運動的不同派系，有反對達富爾大屠殺的組織，反對全球氣候變暖的組織，有反對緬甸軍人獨裁的組織，反對美國工人失業的組織，還有多種多樣的諸如法輪功組織，台灣獨立積極分子等組織。"
原來，第一段話的後半句的不翻是故意的，是為了避免翻本第二段。
The Beijing Olympics is a godsend for these groups because it affords them the opportunity to disrupt the torch relay.

新華網的譯文是"可悲的是我們美國人向來對國際問題了解甚少，尤其是對中國的了解。我們的歷史書上對中國的介紹，包括我們的媒體、政客和民間組織對中國的宣傳長期以來僅僅局限於虛假、無知的信息，造成沒有必要的中國威脅論思想、歧視華人甚至對華敵對的錯誤、畸形的意識形態。"
原文根本就沒有出現所謂的"我們歷史書對中國的介紹，對中國的宣傳，歧視華人的畸形的意識形態等"概念和詞語。
What they do know is this: Just about everything they use and wear daily comes from China. Even the new section of the San Francisco Bay Bridge is being made in Shanghai.
San Francisco Bay Bridge 應該是舊金山海灣大橋，該橋不同於金門大橋，不太為中國人所知。
What they also don't know is how Chinese in China are viewing and preparing for the Olympics in August. Not since the 10-year nightmare of the Cultural Revolution have the Chinese been more dedicated to and collectively mobilized for a national project: to host the first Olympics in China.
在這一段第二句里，譯文將十年文革翻譯成十年申奧，新華網翻成了"但是大部分美國人不知道的是，中國人為了這次北京奧運會的籌辦付出了多少心血，他們期待著這次奧運盛會的勝利召開。可以說，過去這十年，中國人發動了一場"全民戰爭"，為了奧運，也為了自己國家變得更加富強。" 正確的譯文是"他們不知道的是中國人如何看待和準備8月份的奧運。自從文革那十年噩夢之後, 最令中國人專心致力並集體動員的國家項目,莫過於第一次在中國舉行的奧運會."
胡耀邦曾經代表中共中央的表態：徹底否定文化大革命是官方至今的一貫態度，所以譯文是犯了政治錯誤。(借用譯者的翻譯思路)

這一段，新華網翻譯是"奧運會給中國帶來積極的影響不僅僅是在於奧運會本身。現在有超過2億中國人在學習英文，他們想通過北京奧運會讓中國更加融入到我們這個國際社會中去，讓世界更加了解中國。"而正確的譯文應該是"中國渴望通過奧運項目融入世界並且激勵進一步的改革。如，有超過兩億人正在學英語，火炬傳遞在到達北京之前將會受到所有中國省份和主要大城市的歡迎。"新華網將"進一步的改革"這句話翻譯成"讓世界更了解中國"。實乃否定改革也！
China, like many countries in the world, including the U.S., has problems. It has much to learn from the rest of the world. For example, China has yet to learn how to understand and treat its minorities -- such as Tibetans, Uighurs, Muslims, Hmongs -- as equals.
正確的譯文是"中國像包括美國在內的世界上的其他國家一樣都有自己的問題。它要向世界其他國家學習很多東西。例如：中國尚未學會如何理解和平等對待國內的少數民族, 包括藏族,維吾爾族,穆斯林,苗族等. "新華網把第三句話完全給刪除了。
In this respect, they are not that different from us. We are still learning how to treat minorities such as Native Americans, African-Americans, Latinos, Chinese-Americans and others as equals.
在這方面，他們和美國沒什麼兩樣，我們仍在學習如何平等對待土著人，非裔美國人，拉美人，華裔美國人等。新華網的譯文是"中國社會存在著諸多問題，我們美國不也是一樣麼？至今為止我們還無法公平公正地對待非洲裔美國人，拉丁裔美國人和華裔美國人"。關於美國如何對待少數族裔，王教授的原文是肯定式而非否定式。
Humility and compassion, not hypocrisy and self-righteousness, is what is needed.
I am not opposed to free speech and legitimate protests against China's wrongdoings. However, I am opposed to using the Olympics to demonize China and its people and disruptive, confrontational, and violent tactics. Such actions have the effect of desecrating the Olympics and humiliating and insulting the people of China. No good can come of them.
本段的第一句話，正確的譯文是"我不反對言論自由和合法的抗議中國做的錯事"。新華網的譯文是"我並不反對言論自由，我也不反對一些人合法的進行示威、抗議"。新華網將抗議的賓語給省略了。
Protests and confrontations along the torch route may even incite Chinese xenophobia and nationalism and result in decisions to retreat from its increased openness to and engagement with the West.
If this should happen, it will be a major setback for the 1.3 billion people in China and for world peace and prosperity.
正確的翻譯是"沿著火炬前進路線抗議和對抗甚至可能會煽動中國人的排外（對外國人無端恐懼或憎惡）和民族主義情緒並導致中國決定從與日俱進的對外開放和融入西方世界的(努力)中倒退回去。如果這種情形發生的話，那將是對13億中國人和世界和平及繁榮的一個巨大的挫折。"
新華網將最後兩段翻成了: "同時，利用暴力手段干擾北京奧運會聖火傳遞也只會阻礙中國的開放和全球化的進程。如果真是這樣的話，那麼不僅僅對13億中國人來說，對於整個世界來說，都是無法接受的。（完）"
