8月14日，海地發生7.2級地震，震源深度12千米。據當地官員說，地震已經造成至少227人死亡，死亡人數恐怕還會繼續上升。
據美國勘探局消息，這次地震發生在距小鎮聖路易斯杜蘇8公里，距首都太子港125公里，震級芮氏7.2級，震源深度12公里。
美國地質勘探局對路透社說，海地這次強震造成大量人員傷亡的可能性很高。 美國地質勘探局還說，災情相信波及大範圍地區。
海地總理亨利（Ariel Henry）在記者會上宣布國家進入緊急狀態，為期一個月，同時請求國際援助。
2010年1月12日，海地曾經發生過7.0級地震，首都太子港發生6.1級餘震，死亡人數超過20萬。
